Respect is an essential element in any working environment—and lack of respect is a common theme underlying many employment relations issues (that often result in litigation). The manner in which co-workers respect the organization’s values, policies, and each other is reflected in a broad range of behaviour-based standards, from civility and professionalism, to compliance and communications. Disrespectful workplace behaviour can take many disruptive forms, from gossip and intolerance, to more serious patterns of bullying, intimidation, and harassment.

Through an interactive format that includes video vignettes, employers will gain a better understanding of the skills necessary to interact constructively with employees while identifying and responding to behaviour that is inappropriate or leads to conflict. We will also discuss sexual harassment issues as Bill 132, Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan Act (Supporting Survivors and Challenging Sexual Violence and Harassment), 2015, received second reading by the Ontario government on December 15, 2015. If passed, Bill 132 will create substantial new obligations on employers to protect individuals from sexual violence, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.
