Watch out for the Many Legal Pitfalls of Affinity Groups

In this article authored by Littler Mendelson attorney Mark Ogden, the dangers of affinity groups within companies are exposed. "Employers must keep in mind that diversity-focused business initiatives or programs can inadvertently create significant legal challenges," says Ogden, "For example, initiatives that measure progress based solely on strict numbers of applicants or employees of a certain race, gender, etc., may create unlawful quota systems." Ogden also describes legal pitfalls involved with affinity group program at General Motors, and makes recommendations to employers to reduce chances of ending up in court.
